Evangelos Marinakis is best known as chairman of the Capital Maritime & Trading Corporation and owner of the Olympiacos and Nottingham Forest football clubs. Born in Piraeus, Greece, on 30 th July 1967, he is the only son of Irini Marinaki and the Cretan shipowner and member of Greek Parliament Miltiadis Marinakis.

Having earned a bachelor’s degree in International Business Administration followed by a master’s degree in International Relations from a London university, Evangelos Marinakis followed in his father’s footsteps, embarking on a career in the maritime industry.

Evangelos Marinakis worked as a commercial manager for Capital Ship Management Corporation from 1992 to 2005. During his tenure with the company, he oversaw the success and growth of many businesses that today form part of the Capital Maritime & Trading Corporation, a company he founded in 2005. Over the years, this global shipping organisation has grown considerably, diversifying its activities. Today, the Capital Maritime & Trading Corporation manages an extensive fleet of container ships, dry bulk carriers and tankers.

Evangelos Marinakis served as chairman of Crude Carriers Corporation from 2010 up until the organisation’s merger with Capital Product Partners LP in September 2011. He was appointed chairman of Capital Product Partners LP in 2007, presiding over the company until 2014.

In 2017, Evangelos Marinakis purchased an 80% share in the English football club Nottingham Forest. Under Mr Marinakis’s stewardship, the team was promoted to the English Premier League in 2022. Vangelis Marinakis spearheaded an exciting development project for the club, securing the approval of the English Football League for his ambitious plans to redevelop the team’s historic ground, overseeing creation of the largest football stadium in the East Midlands. In addition, Evangelos Marinakis owns an 86% stake in

Olympiacos, Greece’s most successful football club. In 2023, he also invested a substantial sum in Rio Ave, a Portuguese football team.

Joining forces with Yannis Moralis, the then-Olympiacos vice president and mayor of Piraeus, Evangelos Marinakis co-founded the independent ‘Piraeus Winner’ alliance, becoming an elected member of Piraeus City Council in 2014. Prioritising the improvement of living standards for local people, the party’s key focus was on upgrading infrastructure and putting the Greek port city on the map as a thriving tourist destination.

According to Forbes, Evangelos Marinakis and his family have an estimated net worth of $3.7 billion. In addition to owning the Capital Maritime & Trading Corporation, Evangelos Marinakis also owns several private shipping firms and a controlling stake in Capital Product Partners, a publicly traded company. He also owns Alter Ego Media, a leading Greek media conglomerate that owns the country’s second-largest television channel as well as two of the largest Greek newspapers.

Leveraging his public status to drive a positive social and environmental impact, Evangelos is a committed philanthropist who is proud to support a range of worthy causes. In the wake of the Greek financial crisis, he pledged €168,590 to the charity website ‘Greece Debt Free’, which was created with the goal of eliminating Greece’s national debt. He was also a driving force behind a partnership between Olympiacos and UNICEF, helping to establish an immunization scheme serving children across the developing world.

In his home city of Piraeus, Evangelos Marinakis has used his own wealth to fund numerous redevelopment schemes. The Capital Maritime & Trading Corporation has also earned significant recognition for its efforts to improve sustainability and the environmental impact of the global maritime industry, including receiving the Port of Long Beach’s Green Environmental Achievement Award for two consecutive years. The organisation was also honoured with a GREEN4SEA Excellence Award in 2015.
